What It Costs

No, seriously people, editing is expensive. When you buy a developmental edit of your book, what you are getting is the equivalent of a semester MFA class in your genre without having to read and give feedback on the other students' work.

Whether you choose me or another editor, a sample edit is essential. As the author, you need someone whose work you feel is not only competent, but also in line with how you want to work. Some editors do free sample edits; I do not, because you will get more than your money's worth of editing from the sample, and it's an hour I spend 100% focused on you.

Here's an article I wrote for The Writers Bloc on the editing process. It includes some steps you can take to reduce the amount of editing you need, and explains why professional editing is expensive.

Make Professional Editing Work For You

Getting Started

If you're ready to work, send five pages.

There is a $50 assessment fee that will be applied to your overall quote.

Page count is based on standard manuscript or playscript format. Please ask if you have a format question. If you'd rather dump text on me, I'm happy to format for you, but I'll bill that in my time.

If I realize I'm not the editor for you, you will receive a refund. Otherwise I'll send your pages back with edits and a quote for the whole project. If you realize working with me is not a good fit, sorry--I'll have done the work and you bought it. I'm also happy to refer you to other (kinder) editors.

Long Project Rates

Manuscript evaluations and editorial letters begin at $1150; developmental editing, copy-editing and line-editing are $.03/word and up, based on how much work is needed. Try before you buy; send five pages for assessment and you'll receive a detailed quote of what, why, and how much.

Turnaround on full-length manuscripts is 2 weeks. Rush work is available.

Coaching and Mentoring

Ongoing coaching, mentoring, and guidance through the journey to publication can be paid on a per-session, per-project, or monthly basis. An initial phone/Skype session, including a sample edit, is $125.

Short Project Rates

Essays and short stories, $10/page, minimum $60

Plays, $5/page, minimum $60

Query letter feedback (2 drafts), $75

There is a 24-48 hour turnaround on projects up to 20 pages.

Payments are accepted via credit card, direct deposit, and PayPal. You can begin by uploading five pages for assessment (or asking a question) here.
